Frequently asked questions.

About my work and design approach

How would you describe your design style?

My design style is creative and romantic with a contemporary feel. I work with natural shapes, seasonal flowers, and thoughtful color choices, creating floral designs that feel natural and in harmony with their surroundings. My arrangements have been described by one of my mentors as ‘similar to your watercolour paintings’ .. I like that :)

What makes your work different from a traditional wedding florist?

There is no single idea of a traditional wedding florist today. What influences my work most is my Dutch heritage and my background in art rather than formal floristry training. With many years of experience and collaborations across the wedding and creative industries, I can bring a more artistic and contemporary approach to wedding flowers.

How involved are you personally in each wedding project?

I am personally involved in every wedding project from start to finish. I prepare each tailored proposal and take time to speak with my couples to understand their vision. I develop a clear floral plan with visual mock ups and design options, and I personally read and respond to all communication throughout the process. Building a real connection with my couples is an important part of how I work.

Consultations, process, and planning

What is included in a floral consultation?

A floral consultation includes a detailed review of your ideas, venue, and priorities, followed by a tailored floral proposal and quotation. This begins with an in-depth questionnaire (link), and may include follow-up via email or WhatsApp if anything needs clarification. You are welcome to share images or moodboards, and we can schedule a call if helpful. The quotation can be adjusted and refined as needed before and after booking.

What is your booking process?

Once you are happy with the proposal and ready to proceed, I will send you a contract to review and sign, along with a retainer invoice, usually 20% of the total floral budget. After the contract is signed and the retainer is received, your date is confirmed and I am officially booked as your florist.

How far in advance should clients book?

Most clients book around one year in advance, especially for popular dates and high season in Italy. Booking early helps secure your date and allows more time for design planning. That said, I do occasionally take on last minute weddings if availability and timing allow, so it is always worth reaching out.

Do you work directly with planners or with couples?

I work both directly with couples and in collaboration with wedding planners. I generally recommend having a planner involved, as they understand the flow of the day, the venues, and the coordination between all vendors. Through our sister company, FunkyBird Weddings, we also offer wedding planning services, while always being happy to collaborate with external planners.

Flowers, sourcing, and seasonality in Italy

Do you work with seasonal flowers in Italy?

Yes, whenever possible I work with seasonal flowers grown in Italy. My trusted suppliers collaborate closely with local growers to source the best flowers available, ensuring high quality and a lower environmental impact. When specific varieties are not available locally, they are sourced through the Netherlands.

Can we request specific flowers or colors?

Yes, you are welcome to request specific flowers and colors. Availability depends on the season and growing conditions, so some flowers may not be possible at certain times of year. For example, early spring flowers such as anemones are not available for an August wedding. If a flower is unavailable, we will explore seasonal alternatives together that suit your palette and overall design.

What happens if a flower is unavailable close to the wedding date?

When planning your flowers, I always choose varieties that are in season and expected to be available at that time. Occasionally, factors like weather or supply issues can affect availability. If this happens, I will suggest a suitable alternative with the same value and a similar look and color, so the overall design stays true to what we planned.

Sustainability and materials

Do you offer sustainable or foam free designs?

Yes, I offer foam free and more sustainable floral designs. Over the years, I have increasingly focused on alternatives to floral foam and on making environmentally considered choices wherever possible. You can read more about my approach to eco friendly arrangements HERE

Destination weddings and logistics

Where are you located?

The FunkyBird studio is located on the south side of Florence, Tuscany, Italy.

What happens if weather affects floral setups?

This is where good planning really matters. An experienced planner will always have a solid plan B, and choosing a venue with a strong alternative option is key. If the weather changes, we do everything possible to adapt the floral setup and are prepared to move or adjust arrangements so the overall design still works beautifully.

Do you work all over Italy or only in certain regions?

I work throughout Italy. With my base in Florence, most of my weddings take place in Tuscany, a region I know well and love, but I am happy to travel to other parts of Italy for the right project.
