What Makes a Wedding Venue Great for Flowers

When couples start searching for a wedding venue in Tuscany, a few things usually come to mind. You want a place that can host your guests comfortably. You want a reliable plan B in case of bad weather. A pool is always welcome, and of course those wide Tuscan views are often part of the dream.

Now this website is all about flowers, and of course I see these venues through a florist’s eyes.

Some venues simply work better for flowers. The light, the ceremony spaces, the practical side of setting up, and the way architecture and landscape interact with floral design all play a role. When a venue supports what happens behind the scenes, it allows me to create something more beautiful for you.

Over the years, I have worked in many wedding venues in Tuscany, but a handful of them I have returned to again and again. The venues in this guide are places where I have been working for more than a decade. They hold a special place in my heart, and arriving there often feels a little like coming back to an old friend.

Because I know these spaces so well, I also know how flowers behave in them. I understand the light at different times of day, where a ceremony comes to life, and how each setting can be enhanced without taking away from its character.

This is a selection of my favourite long-standing Tuscan wedding venues, seen through the eyes of a florist. I will continue to add new discoveries in a separate guide, but these are the places that have shaped my work over the years.

Borgo Petrognano

Borgo Petrognano is a small wedding venue in Tuscany that is ideal for couples planning an intimate destination wedding with around 35 to 40 guests. Tucked into the countryside near San Gimignano, it offers a peaceful setting surrounded by vineyards and rolling farmland. I want to start this list with a smaller venue that means a lot to me.

Borgo Petrognano is a place we have been working at for more than a decade, and it holds a special place in my heart. It is particularly well suited for couples who are looking for a small destination wedding in Tuscany. The atmosphere here is calm and relaxed, and the surrounding landscape feels wonderfully authentic.

Why I love working here as a florist

The ceremony usually takes place under a green covered pergola, which makes a significant difference for the flowers. During the hottest hours of the day we can work in the shade while preparing the ceremony arrangements. Flowers stay hydrated and fresh for much longer, which is especially important during summer weddings in Tuscany.

From a practical perspective the venue is also very comfortable for vendors. There are several rooms where we can temporarily store tools, buckets, and personal belongings while preparing the floral installations. Having a discreet place to work makes the entire setup process smoother.

Another small detail that I secretly appreciate is the number of restrooms available. It may seem like an unusual thing to mention, but having facilities that guests rarely use allows vendors to move around discreetly without interrupting the flow of the wedding day.

Parking is also extremely convenient. There is plenty of space for our vans, which allows us to unload flowers and materials easily while keeping vehicles out of sight once the celebration begins.

The garden itself is a botanical marvel. In spring you will find large groups of irises, and in summer the garden roses begin to bloom. The venue already has so much natural charm that floral design can simply enhance what is already present in the landscape.

Because of the pergola ceremony space and the surrounding garden, Borgo Petrognano works beautifully with natural, seasonal wedding flowers, especially designs that feel connected to the garden itself.

Conti di San Bonifacio

Conti di San Bonifacio is a boutique wedding venue in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, known for its wide open landscapes, vineyard views, and relaxed luxury atmosphere. It is an especially beautiful setting for destination weddings that combine elegant design with the natural scenery of this part of Tuscany.

Just like Borgo Petrognano, this is a venue we have had the privilege of working with for more than a decade. It is not the easiest venue for us to reach, since it takes about two and a half hours to drive there, but every time I get in the car for a wedding at Conti di San Bonifacio I feel genuinely happy.

Once we pass Siena the landscape slowly begins to change. The forests give way to open views and the scenery becomes wider and softer as we enter the Maremma countryside. The atmosphere feels maritime, with endless golden fields of barley stretching into the distance. The long drive becomes a quiet moment of calm before the wedding day begins.

Why I love working here as a florist

One of the first things that stands out at Conti di San Bonifacio is the team. The staff is consistently positive and incredibly supportive of the vendors working on the wedding. That spirit of collaboration makes a real difference during the day. Whenever a small challenge appears, there is always someone ready to help find a solution.

The ceremony takes place overlooking the valley, which creates one of the most breathtaking ceremony backdrops a couple could hope for. The villa itself has a very calm and refined atmosphere, with sand coloured walls, simple architectural lines, and an infinity pool that blends into the landscape.

We usually prepare the ceremony under two large pine trees, which provide natural shade while we work. This protects the flowers from direct sun and allows them to stay fresh and beautiful for the ceremony.

After the ceremony the celebration moves quickly to the pool area for the aperitif. During that time the ceremony space is transformed into the dinner setting. Within two hours the entire area changes from ceremony to reception.

This is where the collaboration between the venue team, the lighting crew, and the floral design becomes something quite special. Everyone works together smoothly to transform the space, and the result always feels seamless for the couple and their guests.

It is a level of teamwork that I have rarely experienced elsewhere, and it is one of the reasons why Conti di San Bonifacio remains one of my favourite wedding venues in Tuscany to work in as a florist.

Best for: Mid-sized weddings

Villa di Ulignano

Villa di Ulignano is a historic wedding venue in the Tuscan hills near Volterra, known for its sweeping valley views, elegant gardens, and relaxed countryside atmosphere. It is a beautiful setting for destination weddings that combine classic Tuscan architecture with a warm, welcoming spirit.

Reaching Villa di Ulignano requires driving the famous Volterrana route, and that journey is always part of the pleasure. Even after more than twenty five years of travelling across Tuscany for weddings, I still find those drives extraordinary. The light changes throughout the day and the landscape slowly shifts as you move through the hills. Each season brings a different colour to the countryside, and every time we arrive here I feel grateful to be working in such a place.

Villa di Ulignano also has a rather unique history. Tha property was famously owned by renowned Italian film producer Franco Cristaldi, who purchased it in 1967. It became a major creative hub for Italian cinema, frequently visited by director Luchino Visconti, and one of the halls still contains a private cinema. Couples sometimes use this space to preview their wedding film together with family and friends, which adds a charming and unexpected touch to the celebration.

Why I love working here as a florist

The villa offers several beautiful settings for the different moments of a wedding. The ceremony space overlooks the valley, creating an open and luminous backdrop for the exchange of vows. The pool area works wonderfully for welcome dinners or relaxed gatherings before the wedding day.

One of the visual highlights of the villa is the façade covered in vibrant bougainvillea. When it is in full bloom it frames the building in a striking shade of pink, and it naturally invites couples to host their wedding dinner in that space. Floral designs here often work best when they echo the colours already present in the garden.

The real heart of Villa di Ulignano, however, is Paola. She has been welcoming guests here for decades and brings a warmth that is immediately felt by everyone who arrives. Her smile and calm presence set the tone for the entire experience.

Working here often feels a little like coming home, though to a more magical version of it. For couples planning a destination wedding in Tuscany, Villa di Ulignano offers not only beautiful scenery but also a sense of genuine hospitality that stays with you long after the wedding day.

Terre di Nano

Terre di Nano is a countryside wedding venue in the Val d'Orcia near Pienza, known for its breathtaking views over one of the most iconic landscapes in Tuscany. It offers couples a relaxed and authentic setting surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, and the quiet beauty of this UNESCO protected region.

It must be boring, dearest gentle reader, to read once again about beautiful views and Tuscan countryside. But that is exactly why many couples decide to get married in Tuscany, is it not?

Terre di Nano is one of those places where couples immediately fall in love with the ceremony location. The view stretches across the Val d'Orcia, and the landscape feels endless.

The venue is located close to both Pienza and the medieval village of Monticchiello, which means that wonderful food and wine are never far away. Pienza is famous for its pecorino cheese, and nearby Montalcino produces the celebrated Brunello di Montalcino, one of the great wines of the region.

The borgo itself feels warm and welcoming. It reflects the character of traditional Tuscan farmhouses while offering a comfortable and beautifully restored setting for weddings.

Why I love working here as a florist

From a floral design perspective, Terre di Nano is a dream location. The scenery is already so striking that the flowers do not need to compete with it.

Instead of large statement installations, this is a place where delicate floral designs work best. The arrangements frame the ceremony while leaving space for the valley behind it, allowing the landscape to remain part of the composition.

Dinner is usually set under old olive trees, which naturally calls for soft and organic floral arrangements rather than elaborate structures. The result feels connected to the surroundings and perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the venue.

From a practical perspective the venue is also comfortable for vendors to work in. There is enough indoor space for preparation and it also provides a solid option in case the weather changes.

Terre di Nano is one of those Tuscan wedding venues where nature does most of the work, and the flowers simply enhance what is already there.

Location: Val d'Orcia near Pienza and Monticchiello
Guest capacity: Sleeps 50 guests
Best for: scenic countryside weddings with panoramic views and dinner under the olive trees

Florist note: the landscape calls for light, natural floral designs that complement the surrounding scenery

Castello di Meleto

Castello di Meleto is a historic castle wedding venue in the heart of the Chianti countryside, surrounded by vineyards and known for its beautifully preserved interiors and sweeping views. For couples dreaming of a true Tuscan castle setting, it offers a remarkable mix of history, atmosphere, and landscape.

The first time I worked on a wedding at Castello di Meleto I was only twenty years old and still working for another florist. I had just moved to Italy, and arriving at this medieval castle with its Renaissance painted interiors left a lasting impression on me. Even now, many years later, it still feels special every time I return.

The castle rises above rows of vineyards that stretch across the hills around Gaiole in Chianti. It is one of those places where the architecture and the landscape feel completely connected, creating a setting that is unmistakably Tuscan.

Why I love working here as a florist

One of the things I love most about weddings at Castello di Meleto is the ceremony setting. Couples exchange their vows with the castle itself as the backdrop, which creates a striking visual moment. The historic walls and towers give the ceremony a sense of place that is difficult to recreate anywhere else.

Inside, the castle offers many large halls and beautifully decorated rooms. Because of this, the rainy day option never really feels like a compromise. Celebrating part of a wedding inside these historic spaces can be just as magical, surrounded by centuries of history.

Dinner usually takes place in the garden. Guests sit in front of the stone walls of the castle surrounded by cypress trees. The contrast between the ancient architecture and the countryside creates a wonderful atmosphere for an evening celebration.

There is also a moment during the day that I particularly enjoy. Walking through the quiet halls of the castle to find the bridal suite and deliver the bouquet to the bride always feels special. In those moments you can truly feel the history of the place.

From a floral design perspective the garden is quite neutral, which is actually a great advantage. It allows many different styles of floral arrangements to work beautifully, whether couples prefer something classic, colourful, or more natural in style.

Castello di Meleto has been part of my journey as a florist since my earliest years in Italy, and it remains a place I always look forward to returning to.

Location: Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany
Guest capacity: Sleeps 80 people
Best for: couples dreaming of a historic Tuscan castle wedding
